I wanted to provide an update regarding Violence against women and girls, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Iam writing to raise awareness about Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and to highlight practical steps we can all take to help prevent it within our communities. VAWG includes a wide range of harmful behaviours such as domestic abuse, sexual violence, harassment, forced marriage, and coercive control. These acts can have long-lasting physical, emotional, and psychological impacts, not only on victims but also on families and the wider community. Preventing VAWG is a shared responsibility, and there are several key actions we can take: 1. Promote Respect and Equality Encourage respectful attitudes and behaviours in homes, schools, and workplaces. Challenging harmful stereotypes and gender inequality is essential in preventing abuse before it begins. 2. Recognise the Signs Be aware of indicators of abuse, such as controlling behaviour, isolation, unexplained injuries, or sudden changes in mood and confidence. Early recognition can help prevent escalation. 3. Speak Up Safely If it is safe to do so, challenge inappropriate comments or behaviour. Even small actions can help shift attitudes and discourage harmful conduct. 4. Support Victims Listen without judgment, believe those who speak out, and signpost them to appropriate support services such as helplines, refuges, or safeguarding agencies. 5. Report Concerns If you believe someone is at risk, report your concerns to the appropriate authorities. In emergencies, this should always be done immediately to ensure safety. 6. Work Together as a Community Partnership between local services, schools, law enforcement, and community groups is vital in creating a safe environment where abuse is not tolerated. Ending violence against women and girls requires awareness, action, and commitment from everyone. By working together, we can create safer communities where individuals feel valued, respected, and protected. Thank you for taking the time to consider this important issue.
